U.S.-India Relations: An Ambassadorial Roundtable
UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla and School of Global Policy and Strategy Dean Caroline Freund invite you to join Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, along with former Ambassadors Nirupama Rao, Tim Roemer and Richard Verma on Tuesday, Nov. 9 for a webinar discussion of the current U.S.-India relationship. This special engagement opportunity will highlight the important relationship between India and the U.S., and how it will be a significant driver of the prosperity, security, health and well-being of both countries and the world.

India relations is a rapidly changing global strategic and economic landscape. This event is hosted as part of efforts supporting the formation of the 21st Century India Center at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy, which will serve as a world-class hub for the study of modern India and U.S. It will spark innovative research, support the creation and transfer of knowledge, and convene timely policy conversations.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu
Ambassador of India to the United States
Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu is one of the most experienced Indian diplomats on U.S. affairs, having served in the Indian Mission in Washington, D.C. twice earlier. He was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C. from July 2013 to January 2017. Earlier, he was First Secretary (Political) at the Embassy of India, Washington, D.C. responsible for liaison with the United States Congress from 1997 to 2000. Nirupama Rao
Former Indian Ambassador to the United States & Former Foreign Secretary of India
Nirupama Rao is a former Indian foreign service officer. She retired as Foreign Secretary to the Government of India, the senior most position in the Foreign Service. Rao was only the second woman to occupy the post. She was also the first woman spokesperson of the Indian foreign office and she served as India's first female ambassador to Sri Lanka and to the People's Republic of China. She served as ambassador of India to the United States from 2011 to 2013. She has also taught at Brown University and Columbia University. Rao was a Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow and holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Pondicherry University in India. https://www.nirupamamenonrao.net/
Tim Roemer
Former U.S. Member of Congress, 9/11 Commissioner and U.S. Ambassador to India
Tim Roemer is a former six-term U.S. Congressman from Indiana and was deeply engaged in efforts to improve access and affordability for American education, a balanced budget initiative, government reforms and national security issues. He served on the House Intelligence Committee. He was a member of the 9/11 Commission and advocated for a less bureaucratic and more dynamic government organization, creation of the National Counterterrorism Center, and strategic efforts to combat radicalization. He was appointed U.S. Ambassador to India by President Barack Obama and was responsible for broadening and strengthening the U.S.-India partnership. Richard Verma
Former United States Ambassador to India
Rich Verma is the General Counsel and Head of Global Public Policy Law, Franchise and Integrity for Mastercard. He previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, where he led one of the largest U.S. diplomatic missions and championed historic progress in bilateral cooperation on defense, trade and clean energy. Verma is a former Assistant Secretary of State and he also worked on Capitol Hill as the National Security Advisor to the Senate Majority Leader. Verma is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and the recipient of a number of military awards and civilian decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the State Department's Distinguished Service Award. Karthik Muralidharan (Moderator)
Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics @UC San Diego
Karthik Muralidharan is the Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at UC San Diego’s Department of Economics. His research interests include development, public and labor economics, with a focus on improving education, health, social service delivery and effectiveness of public expenditure in India. He is a Board member and global chair of education at the Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), and is an honorary advisor to NITI Aayog, the apex think tank of the Government of India responsible for policy innovation and coordination. https://econweb.ucsd.edu/~kamurali/
